What is a Fishtail Braid?
A fishtail braid is a herringbone plait that mimics the shape of a fish’s tail. Often coveted by fashion mavens and street style stars, it’s a versatile braided hairstyle that’s both fashionable and practical.
It’s easy to master
If you’re looking for a new way to keep your hair out of your face, the fishtail braid is a great choice. It’s also a great option for those with short hair who want to achieve a chic look.
It’s a bit more complex than traditional braids, so it may take some practice to perfect your technique. However, it’s worth the effort!
The fishtail braid can be a great way to add texture and volume. It’s also a great option if you have thick or coarse hair.
A fishtail braid is an incredibly versatile style that can be worn for any occasion! There are many different ways to wear a fishtail braid, from a simple side braid to a more elaborate Dutch fishtail braid. You can even incorporate a double fishtail braid into your look to create two voluminous styles that will be sure to grab the attention of anyone who takes a closer look!
Here are a few of our favorite fishtail braid tutorials to help you get started.
1. Simple Steps to a Classic Fishtail Braid
Start by making a deep side part on the left side of your head. Next, pick up a small slice of hair from the heavy side of your part and split it into two equal sections. Repeat this process on the other side to complete the look.
2. Gather a thin strand of hair from the left section and make it no thicker than 0.5 in (1.3 cm). Pull this up and across your left section, then move it towards the right. Tuck this strand under the right section to become a part of it from now on.
3. Alternately Cross a Small Piece From Each Side Underto Each Other
Begin by crossing a small piece of hair from each half to the other, alternating sides until you run out of hair. You’ll need about 1 in (2.5 cm) of hair from each half to finish your fishtail braid.
4. Use a Fine-Toothed Comb to Brush Up the Ends
After finishing your fishtail braid, give it a quick brush up with a fine-toothed comb to give it a textured, messy look. This will give your braid a little more volume and texture and help keep it looking polished for hours to come!
5. Add a Twist to Your Fishtail Braid
If you’re going for a casual look, loosen your fishtail braid by pulling it on the ends. The result will be a more laid-back look that will still be stylish enough to wear for work or a date.
6. Double your Fishtail Braid
There is nothing more voluminous or glamorous than a double fishtail braid! It is a fabulous updo for any occasion and looks especially stunning on women with ombre hair tones.
