What Food Kills Birds?

When it comes to birds, there are many things that you need to know. They can be very sociable creatures, so it’s important to keep them safe and happy.

What Food Kills Birds

There are many foods that can be harmful to a bird, including some that people eat on a regular basis. This is because avian species are not always capable of recognizing and digesting the different substances in food, so some of the things we consume can be deadly to them.

A bird’s diet should be made up of fresh, high-quality foods that are nutrient-dense. These include fruits, vegetables, legumes, seeds (soaked and sprouted), nuts, and grains.

The most common types of human foods that are toxic to a bird are sugar, salt, and fats. They can lead to nutritional deficiencies, malnutrition, and even death.

Sugar

The sweet stuff we put on our toast and cereal can be bad for birds, as can other foods that contain too much sugar such as candy bars, cookies, and ice cream. These sweets can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and other problems that can ultimately be fatal to the bird.

Fatty Meats

Chicken, beef, and other fatty meats can also be very dangerous for a bird’s health. These foods often contain a lot of sodium, which can disrupt the balance of electrolytes in the body, and can result in illness.

Dairy Products

Milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, butter, and other dairy products can also cause a lot of problems for a bird’s health. These can lead to severe diarrhea and vomiting that can eventually be fatal to the bird.

Peanuts

Although peanuts can be eaten safely by certain types of bird, they are still not a good food choice for most pet birds. This is because they can be contaminated with a fungus that can produce toxins when they’re ingested by a bird.

Garlic and Onions

These two vegetables are incredibly toxic to avians. They contain sulfur substances that can be fatal to a bird.

Caffeine

Coffee, tea, and soda can be a bit difficult for a bird to resist, but it’s important not to give them these ingredients. The caffeine in these drinks can raise their heart rate, increase the blood pressure, and induce tremors and seizures.

Chocolate

While chocolate may be tempting, it’s best not to give your bird any kind of chocolate at all. It’s also not a good idea to feed them chocolate chips because it can lead to diarrhea, vomiting, and even death.

Fruit Pips and Pits

Many fruit seeds and pips are toxic to birds, too. Some have cyanide in them, which is extremely poisonous.

This is because the bird can inadvertently ingest this substance while trying to break open seeds.

Old Paint Residue

Some homeowners are unknowingly poisoning their avian friends by painting around their feeders. If you have a bird feeder on your porch or patio, make sure to take down any leftover old paint that’s on it.
