Top 10 Cabalie of the Pays D’Oc Collection

Each year, the trade body for the Pays d’Oc IGP region releases its Collection of wine, which is judged by a panel of international sommeliers and journalists. Peter Dean, one of the panel’s members, tastes through the 19-strong 2018 range and picks his 10 favourites. This year’s collection features wines from 58 grape varieties.

A mouthfilling red with a long and illustrious medal-winning history, Cabalie is best enjoyed in large glasses. It is made from the oldest Grenache vines in France and displays beautiful, ripe berry flavors. This wine is a perfect accompaniment to a hearty beef casserole.

This award-winning Languedoc-Roussillon blend has an impressive complexity and richness. The blend comprises equal parts of Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Marselan. A three-month barrel-ageing period adds texture and balance to the wine. The 2018 vintage has a hint of a vegetal character but has a complex palate and long, persistent finish.

The Pays d’Oc region is famous for its quality and value. The 100% Syrah Cabalie, sold for just EUR7 at the cellar door, is a prime example of this. It is a deep purple colour and has notes of dark fruit. Its medium-bodied and full-bodied taste is balanced by spice and a hint of greenness. This wine pairs well with a range of red meat dishes and cheese.
