Located in Alexandria, Louisiana, the Silver Dollar Pawn and Jewelry Center is a 35-year-old historical landmark. It is the only pawn shop in the area and features an eclectic selection of historic merchandise. Tammie DeRamus is the daughter of the shop’s namesake, Jimmie “Big Daddy” DeRamus. Although she was not involved in the actual nabbing of the loot, she admits she was more than a foot away from the action.
The deRamus family has been a fixture in the Louisiana Gulf coast business community for more than half a century. They are perhaps best known as the owners of the popular Cajun pawning business, Silver Dollar Pawn and Jewelry Center. In addition to running a pawning business, the DeRamus family owns a small retail store called the Silver Dollar. The shop is located in the heart of Alexandria and has a posh front porch. The DeRamus family have been featured on the History Channel’s hit series, Pawn Stars.
The most noteworthy achievement of the DeRamus family is their charitable giving. In fact, the DeRamus family has donated over $3 million to charities in the past decade. Among them is the local chamber of commerce, the Rapides Parish School District and a number of other organizations. The DeRamus family also donated a hefty amount to the City of Alexandria for its recent redevelopment project. The family has been credited with bringing a slew of new businesses to Alexandria and the surrounding area. The most popular of these are pawn shops, antique and collectibles stores, restaurants, and retail outlets. The city is a hotbed for such ventures and is also home to a number of museums and art galleries.
