Should Fair Skin Wear Gold Or Silver Jewellery?
When it comes to jewellery, there is a wide range of metal colours and gemstones to choose from. But knowing what metal suits you best is a question that many women struggle with. It can be confusing to decide whether you should go for the latest rose gold trend, or if the piece you really love is better suited in silver. So we spoke to jewellery designer Charlotte Blakeney, who spent 16 years working as a make-up artist on fashion shoots and understands better than most how to help her clients match their colours with the best metal.
The first thing to note is that everyone has a cool or warm skin tone. The easiest way to figure this out is by looking at your wrist and seeing what colour your veins are – if they are blue or purple, you have a cool skin tone, and if they’re yellow, you have a warm one. You can also identify your skin tone by noticing how well or badly you tan when spending time in the sun. If you’re a bronzer and return from your holiday with a beautiful golden tan, you have warm tones, and are best suited for gold jewellery such as our Serena 14k Gold Ring.
If you have a cool complexion, you’ll look good in white or light metals such as silver and platinum. If you have a pink or blue undertone, silver will enhance your natural beauty, and it can also help to tone down any redness that may be present in your complexion. However, if you have a reddish tint, you’ll want to avoid wearing gold as this can draw attention to your rosy cheeks and look lacklustre on you.
Gold can sometimes appear too dull on pale skin tones, especially if it is a yellow hue or a darker karat weight such as 24-carat gold. Instead, opt for a more delicate shade of gold such as 18-carat gold or white gold.
Aside from the main categories of cool and warm, some people have a neutral skin tone which means they fit into both categories. If you’re one of these, it’s best to be more flexible and experiment with different jewellery pieces until you find the right match for you.
When choosing your perfect piece of jewellery, remember that the most important factor is that you love it! If you’re unsure about what looks best on you, try a few pairs of gold and silver jewellery on in-store, and ask for opinions from your friends.
Once you’ve found the right jewellery for you, we suggest experimenting with different styles and mixing metals to see what combinations work best.
