Is it Dangerous For a Chihuahua to Have Puppies?

It is common for a chihuahua to get pregnant. However, it is also very dangerous and many dogs have to give birth via cesarean section. This is because a chihuahua has narrow hips and her puppies have large heads that can easily become stuck inside the birth canal of the mother.

If you are a chihuahua owner and your chihuahua is pregnant, it is important to know what to expect so that both you and your dog are healthy throughout the pregnancy. Your vet will be able to tell you how long your dog is going to be pregnant for and when you should start taking her in for check-ups.

In the last few weeks before a dog is due to give birth, her nipples will enlarge and she will start to pant heavily. Her temperature will drop about 24 hours before delivery by about 8 degrees and she may stop eating altogether.

Her vulva (the tissue surrounding the teats) will begin to get larger and more relaxed as well. She might even start to produce milk!

A drop in her rectal temperature is normal, and she might also start to pant heavily.

During labor, her contractions will increase in strength and frequency and she might have a hard time moving around, especially on one side. She might moan and strain for a while, and her water sac may break. Her pups can be born in a few different ways, but they should all be delivered within 45 minutes of the first hard contraction and she will only have a couple of hours between deliveries.

If a bitch’s contractions stop for more than two hours, she should be rushed to the vet as soon as possible. She may still be in a lot of pain but her condition is not life-threatening and she does not need to deliver all of her pups right away.

Puppies are born with a protective fetal membrane that needs to be removed by the mother before they can breathe on their own. You can do this by breaking the sack, wiping any fluids from their nostrils and opening their mouths.

It is important to encourage the mother to lick her puppy all over as this helps stimulate their breathing. She may need to be repositioned several times during this process, so you should try and stay close by to help her.

Once your puppy is born, you should call your veterinarian and let them know how things went. They will then be able to provide you with advice and suggestions on the next steps to take.

Your veterinarian might ask you to bring your puppy in for a check-up right away, and will want to see the puppies again at some point during their development. This will help to ensure that all of their conditions are resolved and that they are healthy.

Most puppies are born safely and quickly. If your puppy is born with a hernia or cleft palate, it will need to be seen by your vet right away. Your vet will then be able to prescribe medication for these conditions.
