Differential oil, or gear oil, is one of the most essential lubrication fluids for your car’s differential gears. It helps reduce friction by eliminating metal debris and corrosion build-up while protecting against damage to them.
To change differential oil, remove and drain the fill plug at the top of the housing before taking care to use a screwdriver to carefully crack open its seal with care.

Unusual vibrations that increase with speed are an early indication that your differential has begun to wear out and needs lubrication. Before installing the new cover, ensure to thoroughly clean all areas where it will come into contact with its gasket using a paint scraper if necessary. If your differential features a fill plug, follow your owner’s manual’s recommendation of type and capacity of gear oil used until your differential is full, after which reinstall its fill plug and tighten to manufacturer torque specifications.
If your differential does not feature a fill port and instead uses a vent tube or breather fitting, check it regularly for cracks, leaks or any other signs of wear and tear. Cracked or leaky vent tubes could allow overheated differentials to overheat, potentially damaging other parts of your car such as wheels, axles, drivetrain and driveline components. In these instances it would be wiser to invest in new differential rather than risk costly repairs down the line; similarly a blown differential vent or breather tube could do serious harm; keeping up-to-date with oil changes will help avoid costly repairs down the line while simultaneously helping improve vehicle performance while improving performance overall.
Your differential is responsible for disseminating power from your engine to your wheels. When the time comes to drain your differential oil, place a pan or basin underneath it and remove the screw covering its fill port. Be wary, as this screw may become very hot; let it cool before opening it.
Once the oil has drained out of your car, you can replace it with fresh oil before reinserting the fill plug. Make sure the drain plug is clean before tightening correctly; changing differential oil may not be an effortless process but remains an important maintenance task that shouldn’t be forgotten.
Loss of Acceleration
