Spotify’s family plan allows up to six people from the same household to share a Premium subscription. It’s a great way for families to enjoy a wide range of music and podcasts at a reduced cost.
The new service comes with some stipulations, however: It requires all account holders to live at the same address. This means that if you want to add friends who don’t live with you, you’ll need to look elsewhere for an affordable plan.
When you sign up for the Family Plan, you’ll be asked to confirm your home address using Google Maps. This isn’t just a one-time verification, either: Spotify will ask you to reenter your address at random times throughout the term of your Premium membership.
Despite this, Spotify maintains that it does not use that information for any purpose other than verifying that everyone on the family plan lives at the same address. It also said it does not store location data for any longer than necessary to comply with laws.
This may seem like a minor issue, but it’s actually quite a big deal. Spotify has 108 million subscribers, and the company is trying to make sure it’s not missing anyone who lives at the same address as someone on the plan.
So, to prevent this from happening, Spotify has come up with a clever way of confirming your home address. It will send you an email inviting you to sign up for the Family Plan and a link that you can click on or copy and paste in another app, such as Facebook Messenger.
Once you’ve signed up, all of the household members will be sent an invitation to join the family plan. They’ll have to accept the invitation and agree to the terms. If they do, the new subscription will be charged to their credit card immediately.
After that, they can start listening to music together. You can even add playlists and create custom listening stations, which will give the entire family a chance to hear their favorite songs.
It’s pretty simple to get started with the family plan: All you need to do is log in to your Spotify account and click on the “family” link, which will appear at the bottom of the page. Then you’ll need to confirm your home address with Google Maps and add all household members who you want to have access to the plan.
If you’re not happy with the service, you can always cancel your subscription and regain your Premium account without having to pay anything. Just make sure that you’ve cancelled before the 30-day trial period is over.
Spotify also recently launched a new feature called Premium Duo, which allows two people to share a single subscription. This includes a Duo Mix playlist, which is curated from the things that each person on the Duo plan likes. There are toggles to make the playlist more chill or upbeat, and you can even download it for offline listening.
