There are many famous activists throughout history who have fought for equality, bringing change to the world. They have helped shape the way we live today and continue to work for a better society. Whether it’s fighting for gender equality, or promoting the environment, these celebrities are always willing to stand up for something they believe in.

Emma Watson

Perhaps one of the best known actresses in Hollywood, Watson is also a passionate feminist who has been involved in a number of campaigns to promote women’s rights and equality. She is a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and an advocate on the HeForShe campaign, which aims to encourage young women to become more involved in the world around them.

Esmeralda Simmons

Simmons has been a civil rights lawyer for more than three decades, working with people who are being treated unfairly in the U.S. She now runs the Center for Law and Social Justice at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, where she provides legal services to people facing discrimination.

Michelle Alexander

As a lawyer, Alexander has been involved in many civil rights cases. She has litigated cases against a number of companies and institutions, including those that have been responsible for the deaths of countless Black people, and is a vocal supporter of the #BlackLivesMatter movement.

John Lewis

The Civil Rights Movement in the United States took a long time to achieve, but it wouldn’t have been possible without the tireless work of activists like John Lewis. He was a leader of many protests and sit-ins in the 1960s, and his dedication to nonviolent activism helped to change laws that segregated buses, restaurants, bathrooms and other public spaces.

Rosa Parks

She is best known for her refusal to give up her seat for a white man on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. This act sparked a series of protests that lead to the de-segregation of buses in that city. Her efforts continued to lead her to the top of her field, and she became one of the most recognizable political activists in the country.

Angelina Jolie

The Oscar-winning actor has been a huge supporter of charity work throughout her career, and is a champion for the environment. She has worked with the UN and many NGOs to help tackle global issues, and is particularly focused on preserving our planet’s wildlife and oceans.

Mark Ruffalo

Easily one of the most famous actors in Hollywood, Ruffalo is a strong supporter of environmental activism. He is especially anti-fracking and founded the non-profit organisation Water Defence, which aims to help combat water pollution by performing testing in contaminated areas.

Leonardo DiCaprio

The Titanic star has been an environmental activist for years, founding the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation in 1998 to protect our planet’s wild places and fight for climate change. He’s also a UN Messenger of Peace for Climate Change and has been active in a variety of conservation initiatives, including those that focus on indigenous rights and the protection of wildlife.
