Blake Russell, the Murderer of Sierra Bouzigard, is Being Held on a $2 Million Bond

The murder of 19-year-old Moss Bluff Louisiana resident Sierra Bouzigard, who was found shot to death on the side of a road in November 2009, has put the case back on the radar of the public. Her murderer, Blake A. Russell, was charged with second-degree murder and is being held on a $2 million bond. Initially, the case went cold when investigators had exhausted all possible leads, but new technology led to renewed interest in the case.

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office investigation into the death of Sierra Bouzigard was redirected by a company called Parabon NanoLabs, Inc. Using new DNA technology, investigators were able to identify Blake Russell as the suspect. Although no DNA was found in Sierra’s rape kit, a fingerprint on a candy wrapper near the crime scene matched the DNA found under Sierra’s fingernails.

The body of Blake Russell was discovered hanging in his cell on Thursday morning. He had been in jail since July 2017, charged with second-degree murder. He is accused of killing Sierra Bouzigard in 2009 on the side of John Koonce Rd. in Moss Bluff. Although Russell had no previous history with Sierra Bouzigard, the evidence linked him to her death.

DNA analysis was used to identify the killer and the murder weapon. Blake Russell was a 31-year-old man. His DNA matched the DNA found on Bouzigard’s body. The suspect was arrested on a $2 million warrant signed by Judge Clayton Davis. The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office has not been convicted of the crime, but the charges have landed on the man’s head and body.
