7 Tips to Help You Hide Open Cabinets
Whether you’re remodeling your kitchen or just looking for ways to update the space, cabinets are a key part of any kitchen renovation. Not only do they provide a lot of useful storage space, but they also add a decorative touch to any room. However, the same aesthetic attributes that cabinet doors add to a space can also detract from a kitchen design if used incorrectly.
If you’re not a fan of open cabinets, there are other ways to get the same look without having to completely overhaul the space. Here are some tips to help you hide open cabinets for an elegant look:

1. Paint a door lattice with electrical tape
Use an old cabinet door as a canvas for this DIY project. Start with a base coat of white paint, then apply electrical tape to the door in a lattice design that intersects vertical and horizontal lines. Let the paint dry, and then carefully peel off the tape.
2. Add texture with fabric curtains
Instead of using a traditional curtain rod, wrap the front of your cabinet doors in fabric to create a custom look that adds texture and visual interest to the room. You can choose from a variety of colors and patterns to suit any decor style.
3. Make a custom pantry shelving system
Condense your dry goods, canned foods and other staples into a pull-out pantry shelf to free up space in the kitchen. This space can be a great way to stash extra ingredients and utensils, or you can add a hidden compartment for wine or other beverages.
4. Make a secret storage area behind a backsplash
If you don’t like the idea of having all your kitchenware visible, but still want the convenience of open shelving, try installing cabinets that conceal a hidden storage space behind a fake backsplash. This solution can be used to store spices near the stove, or mugs on top of your coffee maker.
5. Add a pop of color with open shelves
Open shelving can be a great way to bring in a new hue or accent tone to your kitchen. Consider choosing dishes in bold colors to complement a vibrant tile or brick feature wall, or opt for neutral pieces to soften the look of a busy backdrop.
6. Use folding screens to cover your open shelves
Folding screens are an affordable and easy way to disguise the contents of your kitchen cabinets. They come in a variety of styles and materials and can be folded up when not in use.
7. Create a cork-paper door panel
If you want to give your kitchen cabinets a modern twist, try creating a recessed panel on the inside of the doors. You can purchase adhesive wallpaper in a wide range of hues, from a muted pink to a vibrant yellow (we used Lemon Fresh, $45-$120, Chasing Paper). To adhere the wallpaper, cut it to fit the inside of your cabinet’s recessed panel.
