1944-P Nickel Error

The 1944-P nickel error is a rare coin with a unique composition. Its design is off center and the mintmark is missing half of the coin’s design. Even older examples can be worth $50 to $100. The error coin was struck on the same planchet as the 1944 Lincoln cent and 1944 Belgian 2-franc coins. It is considered a transitional error and a foreign coin error. It has a minimum bid of $38,000.

It is believed that the 1944-P Jefferson Wartime Nickel was struck on a copper-nickel planchet, even though the coin was designed to be struck on a silver alloy. The change in composition came in 1942, and the United States Mint continued to change the composition of the nickel alloy until 1945. As a result, there are a few known 1944-P Jefferson 5-cents that were struck on a standard copper-nickel planchet.

As a result, 1944-P nickels are considered highly collectible. They are more valuable than worn Jefferson nickels. Some silver Jefferson war nickels are still in circulation. The correct grade will determine its true value. In addition, a 1944-P nickel’s mint state will determine the coin’s value.

The 1944-P nickel has a unique design. The Peace Dollar and Jefferson nickels both have mottos, which are almost impossible to misspell. In the early 19th century, these mottos were punched into the individual dies one letter at a time. A double-die 1944 nickel is a rare and valuable collectible.

The value of a 1944-P Jefferson nickel depends on its grade, condition, and full steps of the building. A 1944-P nickel graded by the Professional Coin Grading Service has a record price of $9,400. While the 1944-P nickel is not as common as its Philadelphia counterpart, it is still worth $7 to $10.

There are several die scratches on a 1944-P nickel, including one inside the second U of UNUM. Another example has a die gouge above the right semicircular arch. A die scratch and die clash mark show up on the ER of LIBERTY, as well as on the S of PLURIBUS. In addition, the die scratch and die dot are visible on the left side of the building.
